1. Sheldrick Elephant Sanctuary/Orphanage | Kenya Things to do

Located near Nairobi National Park was set up in 1977 for elephant calves & Rhinos from all over Kenya & managed by Daphne Sheldrick. Witness the heart-warming sight of calves being fed through a Milk Bottle & are rehabilitated until they are stable enough to survive on their own in the wild.

Located in Langata (just outside Nairobi), was set up as breeding center for endangered species “Rothschild Giraffe”. Tourists can visit and feed Giraffe with hands which is an experience in itself.

Established in 1993 & home to nurse and rehabilitate brutally tortured Chimpanzees & rescued from Pet trade. Though Chimpanzees are not native to Kenya, small endangered populations are found in the rainforests of

Tanzania, Uganda & throughout Central & West Africa. It is also a sanctuary for critically endangered “Black Rhinos” & is home to two of the world’s last remaining northern white rhinos brought in from Czech Republic.

4. Lamu

Old town of Lamu is a UNESCO world heritage site since 2001 is known for its architecture & distinct Swahili culture. There are no vehicles on the Island with Donkey & Dhow remain the dominant form of transport. It’s an exotic experience as life slows down & days are spent strolling along the waterfront exploring the town or relaxing on beaches.

5. Kenya’s Lake Systems

Part of UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001, comprising of 3 inter-linked shallow lakes such as Lake Bogoria, Lake Nakuru & Lake Elementaita in Rift Valley province with forests & open grasslands. Lake Nakuru known for pink shades of Flamingos, White Pelicans feeding on fish & Lake Nakuru National Park gives u chance to witness “White Rhino”, Lions, Impala & leopards. Lake Bogoria famed for its hot springs & geysers with high content of Carbon Dioxide due to wild boiling of springs. Lake Elementaita is a destination for rare species like Colobus Monkey, Striped Hyena, Bat-eared Fox, rare Rothschild Giraffe & Eagle Own all reside here. It’s also a paradise for Bird-watching.   

6. Mombasa Marine Park

An allure of natural beauty due to warm azure ocean & coconut palms on sandy beaches, the reserve lies between Mtwapa & Tudor Creeks. It’s ideal for windsurfing, water skiing, snorkelling & diving. Colourful variety of marine life includes sea urchin, crab, starfish, octopus, jellyfish, sea cucumber. The Turtle breeding & hatching season is not to miss. Along the beach you can hire boats to get into Marine Park & water sports facilities.

7. Masai Mara Game Reserve

Regarded as a Jewel of Kenya’s wildlife & world’s finest destination for wildlife tops the list of tourists coming to Kenya. More than 1 million “Blue Wildebeest” & 2,00,000 “Zebras” migrate along the distance of 2900 kms from “Serengeti” in Tanzania all the way to Masai Mara arriving in July & departing in November (which is the peak season to visit). This migration is also called “7^th natural wonders of Africa”. The “Big Five” (Lion, Leopard, Cape Buffalo, Rhinoceros, African Elephant) can be found here. You can reach here by Air/road.

8. Nairobi National Park

Only National Park in the world with variety of birds & animals located close to a Capital city. Principal attraction of all visitors arriving into Nairobi. You’re almost certain to see a “Black Rhino” here in natural habitat.

10. Northern Kenya

Far away north Kenya is expansive, unexplored but rich in colour. Experience desert full of hot & parched landscape. Best way to reach Far north (Turkana) is either by chartered flight from Nairobi or take a road trip (2-3 days) stopping en route at Maralal, Samburu or Marsabit. The trip winds through some beautiful countryside passing by Rendille Camel trains, tiny villages & Nomandic encampments along the way.

11. Mount Kenya:

Africa’s second highest peak is an awe inspiring sight. Ragged peaks  are crowned with snow & slopes are covered with thick forests. For trekkers & adventure seekers, can take a 3-5 day long trek to Point Lenana (4985 m) through fascinating forest, wildlife, unique vegetation & finally world’s rarest sight “Equatorial snow”. General visitors can visit the cool highlands & forest are which is ideal for game viewing. Easily connected by road from Nairobi.

12. Menengai Crater

Located north of Nakuru it’s the single largest surviving volcanic crater in the World. Menengai Crater is an extinct Volacno offering views of Lake Nakuru, Lake Bogoria & Crater itself. Brilliant for photographers is 8KM to the top of crater, beautiful pink & blue colours of both lakes become clearer.

13. Western Highlands

A truly spectacular region with beautiful views of Kerio Valley. The lush green hills around the Kericho Valley are home to Kenya’s Tea industry & nearby Kisii community is world renowned for soapstone carving, Wildlife enthusiasts can visit nearby Saiwa Swamp National Park, one of the few park which allows Walking inside. Highlands are home to many of Kenya’s world famous runners, probably finest place on earth for high altitude athletic training. Travel hub for ths region is Eldoret (Kenya’s 3^rd largest airport) with easy connectivity.
